QUESTION: What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done?
ANSWER: This ones tough. Trust that ‘Monica Gellar’ has always been quite the planner! Although- I did pull spontaneous surprise visits twice!
Once, while Ryan was playing baseball at the University of Illinois and I was in grad school is Pittsburgh, I randomly decided on a Thursday morning (had Friday off) that I was going to make the 8+ hour drive to Champaign to surprise Ryan! I had never drove this far by myself, so was a little nervous- but the adrenaline of seeing my man got me through it. When Ryan called me that night I was about an hour away. I told him I had to work late and would call him back in an hour. When I got there I parked in the neighbors huge circular driveway (thank you sorority girls next door for not telling em to get the heck out of your driveway!)
I snuck up on the porch and realized that ALL 8 of the guys were sitting there in the living room, with Ryan sitting right there with his back to the window- PERFECT! I tapped on the glass and jumped to the side. Ryan turned and looked but just for a quick second. I did it again and he got up to look out. When he did I jumped in front of the window with my hands up and a big smile!
Gas for an 8 hour drive… a lot, I don’t remember.
Snacks for the ride… Free. You know I had a bag of fruit in the car with me!
The look on Ryans face when he realized what was going on… PRICELESS!!!!!

I actually did this again when I was working for the Big Ten in Chicago and Ryan was playing ball out in California. My buddy at work was going for a 3-day weekend to visit his girlfriend and I was jealous. He told me to check out last-minute flights, that, “Hey, you never know.” I did. No joke- found a round trip flight with a rental car for only $220!!! That’s a steal- so took my lunch to run home and pack for the flight I had in 4 hours! On my drive from the rental car place to Ryans apartment (by the time I got in they had just got home from their game) I called him to throw him off my trail complain about work. Once I pulled up to his place I said I had a bunch of groceries to carry into the house and had to let him go.
I went up to his door and tried to calm myself down. Both times I pulled this surprise my heart was POUNDING! It actually is now just telling the story- NO JOKE! I checked the door and it was unlocked, so I called him and asked if the stars were out there and told him to go look, that the stars here- ‘supposedly Chicago’ were gorgeous. As I heard him walking towards the door I whipped it open and jumped in! Him and his 2 roomies just stood there shocked! No one said anything or reacted for a good 20 seconds- it was hilarious! I couldn’t stop giggling like a little kid! Heres a pic from that weekend…
So yea- I am all about the surprise
Long distance relationships are insanely hard. You need things like this to remind you of how much you mean to one another and how far you’d go to make each other happy.
You guys are probably so sick of all my mushy love stories- but hey, you asked the questions!!!
