Mad Dogg Athletics Certified since 9/2009.
After about 5 years of taking spinning classes, I was presented with an opportunity to instruct. I jumped at the chance, figuring why not get paid to do something I already love?
I became certified back in 2009 through Mad Dogg Athletics, the owners of all things Spinning. I took the comprehensive Orientation Workshop, which gives you all the tools you need to become a certified instructor. The workshop covered everything from proper bike setup and safety, heart rate training, coaching skills, to creating class profiles. It was amazing!
This is the bike that I am currently instructing classes on.
As with any certification, it is essential that you continue your education. There are many ways to do this, including attending workshops, taking an online course, or attend the annual World Spinning and Sports Conference (WSSC). I completed an online course dedicated to Spinning and Weight Loss in July 2011. I loved refreshing my memory and learning a few new things about exercise, nutrition and overall health. While I am not a nutrition expert, I feel that I have the knowledge and experience to help my clients/students achieve better body composition and/or lose weight, practice healthier eating habits and enjoy better energy levels.
I am also attending a workshop in a few weeks (August 2011) that is dedicated to practicing both Spinning and Yoga. More on that to come. **Edited to add that the workshop was canceled. I was so upset, but hear it will most likely be rescheduled for a future date. Crossing my fingers.***
I completed another online class, Mental Training, in August 2011. This one was interesting as it covered a specific form of mental training called Peak Performance and how to achieve it.
While the online classes are a great way to educate myself, I definitely prefer the workshops. I’d much rather be in-person, not only learning from the instructor, but being shown examples and experiencing how they teach, too.
